Colloidal Microcrystalline Cellulose (Colloidal MCC)

Colloidal Microcrystalline Cellulose is a co-processed functional excipient composed of Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) and Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose (Na-CMC).

Unlike standard MCC, which is purely an insoluble filler, Colloidal MCC is designed to disperse in water under high shear to form a stable, three-dimensional thixotropic gel network.

It acts as a structural framework that supports insoluble particles, prevents phase separation, and enhances mouthfeel.

Key Benefits

Superior Suspension Stability: Effectively prevents the sedimentation of active ingredients or solids, even in low-viscosity systems.

Unique Thixotropic Rheology: Exhibits “Shear-Thinning” behavior—flows easily under agitation (pumping/spraying) and sets instantly when at rest.

Heat & Acid Stability: Maintains functionality across a wide pH range and remains stable during UHT (Ultra-High Temperature) or retort processing.

Creamy Texture & Mouthfeel: Functions as a fat mimetic, providing a rich, creamy lubricity without adding calories or fat.

Excellent Compatibility: Synergistic with other hydrocolloids and surfactants.

Target Applications

1. Pharmaceuticals

Essential for Oral Suspensions, Dry Syrups, and Nasal Sprays.

Ensures uniform dosage by keeping API particles suspended.

Improves the cling-time of nasal sprays on mucosal surfaces.

2. Food & Beverage

Plant-Based Beverages: Stabilizes calcium and cocoa particles in almond, oat, or soy milk.

Dairy Products: Prevents whey separation (syneresis) in yogurts and processed cheeses.

Dressings & Sauces: Provides cling and body to low-fat pourable dressings.

3. Personal Care & Cosmetics

Sunscreen & Lotions: Ensures even distribution of UV filters and provides a non-greasy finish.

Color Cosmetics: Keeps pigments suspended in liquid foundations and concealers.

Formulation Tip: How to Activate

To unlock the full potential of Colloidal MCC, High Shear Dispersion is mandatory.

1.Add the powder to the water phase.

2.Apply high shear (using a Silverson mixer, colloid mill, or high-pressure homogenizer).

3.The energy breaks the aggregates, allowing the CMC to “hydrate” and lock the MCC particles into a protective network.
